What is website accessibility?

Website accessibility is all about making website available to all types of user, including the visually handicapped.

The visually handicapped does not just mean the blind but also anyone with a handicap that effects their sight.

Why is it important?

Although it may seem strange, the visually handicapped as a group are extremely active users of the internet. To do this they often make use of specialist tools that help the to "read" a website.

If a website is not written with accessibility in mind then the specialist tools that help the visually handicapped opten cannot "read" a website.

How can you make websites more accessible?

There are a number of simple ways you can help make your website more accessible:

  1. do not uses frames - they confuse most of teh software used by the visually handicapped
  2. use the alt attribute within the image tag and make sure the comments are adequate to convey what the image repressents
  3. take care of how you use tables and make sure you use the summary attribute to say what the table contains
  4. if you use pop-ups, make sure you have a warning that can be read by the visually handicapped
